Wednesday Hodgepodge 16/1

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's's the list for 2013-

fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (an acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.

I have to say YOLO! I cannot stand it and it actually sounds stupid when spoken in a sentence. I understand why people shorten words to make them quicker to say but surely saying 'You Only Live Once' sounds better than shouting YOLO?!?!

2.  When was the last time you rode a train?  Where did you go?

I only tend to ride the train when heading into London as it's only a 25 minute journey. The last train journey I took was back in November to go to my capital to see the theatre!

3. Bagels-yay or nay?  Favorite 'flavor'?  Favorite topping?

I had never tried a Bagel until when I went to California last year. Americans sure like them for breakfast, since I had them for breakfast most days. I loved mine with Jam! But I also like the savoury caramelised onion ones with smoked salmon yum!

4.  'Tis the season of awards shows...if you could star in a movie already made which one would you choose?

Ooo this is a hard one. If you asked me when I was little I would have said The Little Mermaid and be Ariel hehe! But I think I would love to star in some kind of musical where I could sing and dance like the The Sound of Music or Hairspray. However, I would love to star in a film like Pride and Prejudice to wear the clothes, to speak the words they express and experience the lifestyle they led in some respects.

5. The move towards single gender classrooms has been making the news in recent months....what say you?  Do you think kids perform better if seperated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination?  If you're a parent, is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?

I do not agree with this but I do understand why parents put their kids into single sex schools. My Mum went to an all girls school mainly because of the high academic reputation not because my grandparents had an issue with my mum being in classes with males. I don't feel it's discriminatory one bit unless someone is forced to go to a single sex school against their will/choosing. The reason why I don't agree is because I really enjoyed going to school with a mixed sex class. Especially in secondary (high) school as most girls I found were quite bitchy so it was a welcome change to share my lessons with males too! Simon went to an all male school and he mainly has male friends. My Mum's closest friends she went to school with are girls. I think it's nice to develop friendships in schools with both male and females!

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?

The bathrooms! I have a really rubbish non-power shower so I RELISH hotel showers and I love all the little compliment shower gels, shampoos, soaps etc you get!

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013?  What's the story behind your choice?

I have not chosen a word but thinking about it I would choose 'Calm'. Mainly because 2012 was so hectic. I went to California, Australia, Lake District, Cornwall and Spain three times! Plus, I started a new job and took on a more specialist role too. I am not complaining as I made some of the best memories ever but I am looking forward to 2013 being a little bit more relaxed and calmer!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Snow-apocalypse was meant to arrive in the UK and it did - up north. We barely had a smatter down south. It honestly looked like someone had just sieved flour outside. Disappointed weather man!

Does your area not get much snow? In my part of the world, we get plenty! This winter has been a light one, and everybody is pretty happy with that. Where we are, sometimes the winters seem to last nearly half the year.
Have a great day!

I've never heard anyone use the 'word' yolo. You went some great places in 2012!

I like how you described the snow outside your window. It's the same in my area.

I am 100% with you on YOLO! sure have done some extensive traveling! I'd love to visit Spain, one day!

I said YOLO too! And nope - up north the snow was pretty pathetic. I think they got some bad snow in Aberdeenshire, but nothing 'snowpocalyspey' that they aren't used to!

Toasted bagel with strawberry jam is my favourite, but I do remember having one with scrambled egg and smoked salmon - that was pretty good too! I love peace in hotel rooms - the different look to at home and the fact that I don't have to make my bed, and everything feels so new! Last time I rode on a train it was a fun run with a whole bunch off friends and a picnic basket!

I loved the train ride in England however that was over 40 years ago. We went from London to the Lake District.

California has a Yolo County. But Yolo doesn't stand for anything. Have no idea why they named the county that, but whatever. If I heard someone should YOLO, I would have been like, 'why are they so dang proud of Yolo county?!' lol

I prefer mixed sex in high school cause I was able to make friends with boys easier. But in middle school (6-8 grade, ages 11-13) I'm not so sure. Some classes I would have preferred separate.
