When you need it most.

Last night was my first day back work in 2 weeks. It may not seem a lot but honestly the most sick days I've taken off being ill is 2 days max. I am better now after feeling like I had been knocked down by a bus for a fortnight.

This may sound silly but I was really nervous returning back to work. I just felt really out of the loop. Thank heavens I was working with Ali who made me feel at ease. During my night shift last night I had to sort out some paperwork at 4am and in my 'pigeon hole' I came across a card. I thought it was a Christmas card I hadn't seen and tossed it to the side. I'll keep it for this year I thought to myself.

But because the envelope was blue I didn't think it was very festive! Okay maybe I was being a little over-analytical about envelope colours- but it was 4am and I was ridiculously tired. So I opened it and when I read it I cried.

I was feeling on edge all night and this just made me feel so much better. It's funny how when your feeling really down the simplest of things can make you feel a little more human again. I came across it when I really needed it the most.

This lovely lady who I cared for does not even realise how much this act of kindness means to me.

Awe how sweet. I can see how that would make you feel better. That's awesome. I assume it's from a patient and am hoping that isn't / wasn't the last thing he ever wrote :) Glad you are feeling better!!!

Lovely. Encouragement is so important. Hope can find a safe space to keep it to remind you that you're a great nurse and you make a huge difference during the tough times in people's lives.

Wow! What an awesome card!
Next time I finish up in hospital (which, hopefully, had better not be for ages!) I am going to do this for whoever has to put up with me! ;) Thank you for the idea, and I'm glad you're feeling better. Being sick for two weeks sounds hideous!!

Notes from patients mean a lot. And compliments from them always seem to come at just the right times....
