Nurses Day

This week at work we celebrated Pride in Nursing and today is International Nurses Day. I have said it over and over again. I love my job. To be honest I don't see it as a job because I don't feel like I work. As they say if you love your career then you don't have to work a single day in your life. Yes some days are cry worthy but most days leave me buzzing.

So today I am going to list my five favourite things I LOVE about nursing and why they leave multiple smiles on my face everyday.

  • The people -  I go to work never knowing what characters I'm going to meet. I meet so many wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) people who truly amaze me. It's simple, without the public needing nursing care we would be out of a job.
  • Critical thinking - Nursing is not just a qualification. It's life long learning. Everyday I have to think outside of the box. Nursing is continually evolving and changes all the time that sometimes it's hard to keep up! But I count my blessings that I get to use my brain and hopefully use it to make people feel better.
  • The variation -  I ADORE that if I get bored in one area of nursing there is always another avenue to take. Whether it be on a ward, in surgery, in the community or doing research. I find it exciting knowing that in ten years time I could be working in a new field. I am not limited one bit!
  • The way it makes me feel -  I genuinely feel happy when I am caring for others. There are days we are short staffed, tempers flare, get stressed and that can affect the care you give. But when a patient says 'thank you' or show they appreciate what you have done it makes it completely, 100%, worth it
  • We're always needed -  It is reassuring to know I will never be out of a job, unless I want to be (which will never happen). At some point in all of our lives we all need nursing care and I am so thankful nurses exist!
I'm the luckiest person to do what I do. I cannot thank each person I have cared for enough for allowing me to teach them, care for them, help them. It's a pleasure, everyday it's an absolute pleasure. I'm proud to be a nurse. So, happy nurses day to every single nurse out there. You do a cracking job!

What a blessing to have a vocation that means so much and how lucky are your patients to have someone care for them who loves her job so much! x
